Gynecomastia or Male Breast Reduction in Ventura County

Gynecomastia also called male breasts is an abnormal development of mammary glands in males which results in breast enlargement. Gynecomastia has various types including saggy and fatty breasts, puffy nipples, and asymmetric/unilateral gynecomastia. Male breast is a common condition that occurs physiologically in adolescent males around the time of puberty; however it is not commonly seen in adults. The treatment for Gynecomastia is becoming one of the more common cosmetic surgery procedures in the US and involves Male Breast Liposuction and Direct Excision of the glandular tissue.

What are the causes of Gynecomastia?

Large male breasts may be caused by several factors including excess weight, medications, and steroids among the common causes.

What are the treatments for Gynecomastia?

The mainstay treatment for Gynecomastia is Male Breast Liposuction. Depending on the type and amount of fatty or glandular tissue two treatment options are available. Liposuction which allows for a smaller scar, usually located on the outside edge of the breast, is preferred by most patients due to minimal scarring. Direct Excision with Liposuction involves a larger incision around the areola usually about 1-1/2 inches. This method allows the excise a larger volume of fat or glandular tissue, and is used in combination with liposuction to smooth the edges with the "feathering" technique.

Which method is best for me?

Dr. Hanna will discuss which treatment option is best for you depending on the amount of tissue that is required to be removed. The Male Breast Liposuction alone can sometimes be the more difficult option to extract all of the fat/glandular tissue.

Can Gynecomastia recur?

Male Breast Liposuction will help remove most of the fat/glandular tissue and the recurrence of it is not likely unless the glandular tissue is stimulated with medications or steroids.

How is Male Breast Liposuction performed?

Male Breast Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. The breast tissue is injected with lidocaine tumescent solution, then Liposuction of the male breast is done though a tiny incision to remove all the excess fat. If there is any glandular component present, then Dr. Hanna removes it through the liposuction opening under the breast near the areola.

When can you return to work?

Depending on your occupation, many patients may return to work within 4-6 days, although full recovery may take 4-6 weeks.

What happens after Male Breast Liposuction?

Following the surgery you will be provided with a compression vest that will greatly reduce swelling. The removal of the fatty and glandular tissue will create dead-space which will be minimized by the compression vest.
